Prajnopaya Awarded $120K NIHA Grant
September 10, 2011

The Prajnopaya Foundation's groundbreaking work on TB detection and treatment in Bihar was recently recognized through a research grant awarded by the Global Asia Institute at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in August of 2011.  The grant was part of the NUS Initiative to Improve Health in Asia (NIHA), which supports innovative research across a broad range of topics focusing on public health and healthcare delivery in Asia. A research team consisting of Dr. Scott Kennedy, Director of Prajnopaya Foundation, Dr. Manish Bhardwaj, co-founder and CEO of Innovators in Health (IIH), and Dr. Anthony Chin, Associate Professor at NUS, presented their proposal, "Reducing TB Incidence through Incentivized Case-Finding Networks: Modeling and Evaluation of a TB Detection Program in Bihar, India".  The proposal focused on the progress of Aahan -  an ongoing TB detection and treatment program run jointly by Prajnopaya and IIH since June 2010 - and the use of community health workers to greatly enhance TB case detection. The proposal highlighted novel means for extracting knowledge from the program and translating the lessons learned into policy recommendations for the Indian national TB program. The grant totaling US$120,000 will support the team's continued work to enhance TB detection and treatment in a region where improved care is desperately needed.

Prajnopaya launched its Tuberculosis Treatment and Prevention Efforts in 2005 in Bihar, India. The initiative seeks to develop low-cost "new solutions" in TB diagnosis, drug delivery and adherence models.
